In a mysterious train station in Morocco, a group of strangers (including a torch singer, a shoe salesman who also seems to be a sinister puppet master, and an artist) by turns reveal themselves—but all refuse to share the closely guarded contents of their luggage. Dominick Argento and John Donahue’s surrealist gem plays with the operatic form, interweaving a captivating mix of musical styles in a brilliantly colored score to create a piece that is at once timeless and very modern. Performed in English with supertitles.
